Application of visible and near-infrared spectrophotometry for detecting salinity effects on wheat leaves (Triticumasativum L.) CIGR Journal
Mokhtari, Mohammad Hossein; Sodae, Hamid Reza; Hakimzadeh, Mohammad Ali; Tarighat, Fahimeh.
Soil and water salinity is the most limiting factor for plant growth and productivity. Due to a high rate of evaporation, agricultural lands become saline in arid regions after a while. This leads to a decline in plant production. The present study investigated the capability of visible and near infrared (VNIR) spectrophotometry as a non-destructive method in detecting salinity effect on wheat leaves. A completely randomized design was work out with four salinity levels and three replicates. Wheat seeds were planted in plastic pots and irrigated with four levels of saline water [0 (control), 4, 8 and 12 dSm-1] Leaf spectrophotometry at VNIR (190-1100 nm) wavelength was performed on wheat leaves at the nodule-formation growth stage. The results indicated...

Depth distribution of exchangeable aluminum in acid soils: A study from subtropical Brazil Agronomy
Rabel, Diego Oliveira; Motta, Antonio Carlos Vargas; Barbosa, Julierme Zimmer; Melo, Vander Freitas; Prior, Stephen Arthur.
Due to potential crop toxicity, high aluminum (Al) availability requires increased attention when preparing agricultural soils. However, research examining the relationship between depth distribution of Al and soil weathering has received little priority in Brazil, particularly regarding the number of soil profiles investigated. This study analyzed 38 acid soils selected from Soil Surveys in southern Brazil to identify and isolate the effects of organic and mineral components on depth distribution of exchangeable Al extracted with KCl (AlKCl). These soil profiles were divided into the following three groups based on AlKCl depth distribution: Group I – decrease with depth; Group II – little variation with depth; and Group III – increase with depth. High...

Discrimination of geomorphic surfaces with multivariate analysis of soil attributes in sandstone - basalt lithosequence Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Campos,Milton César Costa; Marques Júnior,José; Souza,Zigomar Menezes de; Siqueira,Diego Silva; Pereira,Gener Tadeu.
The geomorphic surface concept allows interrelationship among various branches of soil sciences, such as geology, geomorphology and pedology. This association enhances the understanding of spatial soil distribution through landscape, pointing out the soil attributes behavior, which are mainly related to stratigraphy and relief forms. Therefore, this study aims to apply multivariate statistics to categorize geomorphic surfaces in sandstone - basalt lithosequence, so as to provide a basis for soil assessment in similar areas. The study area is located in Pereira Barreto County, SP, Brazil. An area of 530 hectare was selected, where three geomorphic surfaces (I, II and III) were located and mapped. In this area, 134 soil samples were collected at depths of...

Soil water storage and its temporal association with other water-atmospheric variables in a tomato field under different irrigation regimes CIGR Journal
Abegunrin, Toyin Peter; Adesina, Adetunji Emmanuel; Awe, Gabriel Oladele; Ojo, Olumiyiwa Idowu.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different irrigation regimes on soil water dynamics and temporal associations with other water-atmospheric variables in a tomato field under different drip irrigation regimes in southwestern Nigeria. The experiment was 3 x 3 randomized complete block design (RCBD) with a split plot arrangement of treatments in three replicates. Irrigation frequencies of applying water every 7, 5 and 3 days designated as F1, F2, and F3, respectively serve as the main plot of the experiment while irrigation depth of 100, 75 and 50% of crop water requirement ( ) designated as D1, D2 and D3 are the sub-plots. During the growing season, soil water storage (SWS) was monitored in soil depths of 0-5, 5-10, 10-20 and 20-30 cm using...
